We would like to allow customers to be able to download the measurement data, without requiring the global role that gives them access to everyones data. In particular we'd like them to be able to schedule the data download like we can on the admin panel.
At the moment we have a customer that requires monthly data downloads and we have to download that data and the email it to the customer on a monthly basis, which of course is not very elegent.
I voted for the feature request, although from my point of view it is not a function but a bug, because the behavior is not consistent at the moment.
Since this is a critical issue from our customer perspective, we have opened https://getsupport.softwareag.com/servicedesk/customer/portal/2/SI-513860 .
If the export feature cannot be easily isolated in a user's inventory access permissions, could introducing an "export" permission also be a way to make it more consistent?
Hi Nikolaus,
Having more contextual export buttons would make sense, provided there is still somewhere to go (like Reports>Exports at the moment) where you can obtain all the data in one place so you dont have to navigate to many different pages to get the full picture of your data.
I do think that the export permissions should be tied to the relevant READ permission for the type of data youre trying to export.
If you want to export measurements, you must have measurements.READ inventory permission.
If you want to export alarms, you must have alarms.READ inventory permission.
And as is currently the case a global permission equivalent would take priority.
Kind Regards

Hi Ben,
thanks for the detailed explanation. That makes perfect sense. Unfortunately, we currently are not planning and do not have capacity to improve the exporting service.
As we are generally not entirely happy with the usability of the export functionality, one idea that we were discussing was moving the exporting functionality to the different pieces of the UI.
This way, measurements could e.g. be exported through a button within the Data Point Graph, Events and Alarms through a button in the Event / Alarm list and devices through a button in the device list. Does this sound like a good idea to you?
Hi Nikolaus,
Because Cumulocity does not support the ability to allow the customer to download their data without also giving them access to view everyones data.
I included the support reference where Cumulocity technical support told me that this is not possible with the current software version.
I would expect that the export should be available if the user has the inventory role, but instead the export relies on the global role which means if we were to enable this permission the users could see everyones data, not just their own.
We have a similar problem with device management We cant allow users to register their own devices without giving them control over all devices so we have to request that the customer contacts us once their devices are installed in application and online, then we have to register them and move it into the customer group. There are a number of permissions on Cumulocity that dont make much sense to us as theyre too broad stroke. When we want to grant access to 1 small feature theres usually no way to do it without granting access to a wide range of features and on everyones devices, not just their own.
Kind Regards

Hi Ben. Thank you for your feedback. Can I ask why the customer cannot login into the system and download the data himself. Is this related to the permission scheme that you are using?
